Alternative Treatments
A "Holistic approach" to health care is becoming very popular. It is indeed important to think of any illness as part of the overall situation, rather than a separate entity in its own right. Lots of factors such as diet and aspects of the environment can play a part in the development of disease, and hence its treatment. However it is also fashionable these days to consider a large variety of "alternative treatments" which cannot be shown scientifically to be of any value. As a general principle this practice believes in evidence-based treatments. We feel that anything which can be shown to be helpful in any way should be available where it applies. Acupuncture is an alternative treatment which has been shown to provide genuine benefit for certain conditions (mostly in the treatment of pain). One of our vets, Ms Clare Miller, is pleased to be able to provide acupuncture for pets. Please see the next paragraph. Most other alternative treatments have not been shown to be beneficial when put to scientific test, so we do not tend to provide these things ourselves. However where they do no harm we are happy for them to be used, sometimes alongside our "conventional" medicines. We are happy to discus these issues if asked.
